Nesting Boxes Workshop

5 November 2022: We had a fabulous workshop with Simon Cherriman and Danielle Crichton of Re-Cyc-Ology, learning all about how to increase nesting sites for our local native birds and mammals by making nesting boxes. They showed us how to make a variety of animal homes that are suitable for owls, possums, parrots, ducks and smaller birds. We also got tips and tricks to make sure the boxes are safe for the target animals to use them. Important things to consider include: Can it drain? Can animals can climb back out? Will it deter feral bees?

Once made, we went to Ashfield Flats and installed 10 new nesting boxes up in trees between the end of Iveson Place and the Hardy Road drain. Keep an eye out for them! We even got to see the famous Dougie the Dugite, he slithered away in front of us.

Thanks to Simon and Danielle, everyone who came for really pitching in and making it a great day. Thanks to the Australian Business Enterprise Centre for the grant to run this, and the Town of Bassendean (the wonderful Caitlyn White) for all her assistance with the venue and getting permission to put them up.

We have a map and guide for you to go check out the nesting boxes. Please let us know if you see animals using them - and if you can take a photo that would be great! Send via email (contact in footer) or via our the Ashfield Flats Nesting Boxes Facebook page. For each nesting box, there is a post (numbered 1-10) where you can comment with your observations.
