Background on the KIARA Bushland site / The flora of the KIARA Site
This has started from Linda, a Lockridge resident
The site is bushland behind the Kiara Police Station
that maybe reserved for a TAFE Site.
Comments from Ron ...
This is one of those situations where the current Western Australian Government policy framework
does not rate the bush “Regionally significant” so doesn’t qualify for protection under Bush Forever,
but it is undoubtedly locally important judging by the history to date. There are other scientific,
landscape scale criteria by which it can be judged. From what I have seen on the outside of the site,
there are nice bits!.
I am certain that BPG has made submissions in support of saving Kiara Bushland in the past
and we would probably be happy to help again.
Comments from Linda
Ron is correct regarding Kiara site. I'm trying to contact Kirsten Tullis who is most familiar with site
and has been fighting for a long time. We had come to a conclusion that unless we were able to find
a rare species of native animals living on area we wouldn't be able to have it saved. Kirsten was working
on that some time ago but I'm not sure of conclusion. I think Kirsten also had a more recent flora and
fauna study done too as well as the history of what avenues they have already been down.
The last time I spoke to Kirsten she was at the point of giving up as we'd hit a brick wall as to what other
avenues we could take and she'd been fighting for years. It may be best if I speak to Kirsten first and let
you know what the latest is so we're not wasting time and doubling up.
Calytrix fraseri (purple starflower)
Adenanthos obovatus (basket flower)
Euchilopsis linearis (swamp pea)
Nemcia reticulata (Nemcia capitata or bacon-and-eggs is a close relative and is also here)
Leucopogon propinquus (this might be Astroloma xerophyllum instead)
Laxmannia ramosa (branching lily)
The climbing drosera might be one of three species
Gompholobium tomentosum (hairy yellow pea)
There might be a small blue orchid in flower called blue fairy orchid or Cyanicula deformis.
Other early flowering plants are the rattle peas - Daviesia spp.
I've attached a list of species (2003) from the KTS that we found (North East Catchment Committee that I was a member of) -
this doesn't include other species identified by environmental consultants (Alan Tingay & Associates) who did a survey in 1996.
Cheers,
Kirsten

Bassendean Central & South - 13% vs 10% bush forever in Bassendean discussion

Hi Mary It is correct to say that Bush Forever
proposed 13% of Bassendean Central and South for protection,
however, as some of the larger sites supporting
Bassendean Central and South vegetation complex are
Commonwealth lands such as Perth Airport and Jandakot Airport
where the State Government has no control, the area that is
protected will be less than 13% and may be closer to the
10% minimum. We also know that Bassendean Central and South
is currently poorly reserved across the remainder of its
range south of the Perth Metropolitan area.

Hello Gary Is it correct that 13% Bassendean central& south
is likely or will be secured in Bush Forever? Has anyone
from your office actually had a look at this site? It does
have some Marri Woodland and a Priority taxon Pityrhodia
City of Swan dont want to know about it- even though a
MRS amendment to rezone it was rejected some years ago by
Upper House. Good local bushland where conservation just
doesnt happen in a policy vacuum ??? cheers Mary ------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kirsten Tullis <kt500@iinet.net.au>

Yesterday a letter arrived addressed to me from Martin Whitely (14 Oct), with a copy to him of a letter from the Planning Minister (23 Sept). I don't have a scanner for attaching documents so I've typed them out.
(I've added Jenny Justo to the cc box - I spoke with Jenny last week and she would be interested in getting involved/attending our meetings).

Subject: Kiara Bushland SIte web site is "up"
Hi all,
Please note that the "Save the Kiara Bushland" web site is up & running.
The web address/URL is www.bur.st/~skb
The email address is skb@bur.st
Emails are currently set up to be re-directed to my email address.
For those not very familiar with their keyboards - the ~ tilde is in top left
corner.
"skb" stands for Save Kiara Bushland.
Please note that site is draft only.
The main idea is to be able to check the text.
Some things we are planning to do are:
- get rid of "Tafe"
- get rid of progress assoc. & put in credits/thanks
aethetics:
- set up 'contact us' as menu item
- consistent menu placement on every page
- page wider to suit 800 x 600
- more white space between menu & main page
- get rid of graphic above menu column
- stretch header to across menu column
- more resolution on main map/ aerial photo
The costs incurred so far are $0
The bur.st is a donation based web host - so I believe it's appropriate to
donate something. I reckon $20-$30/annum is reasonable.
Criticisms and comments welcomed.
Paul.
