Did you know that common household items such as batteries cannot be placed in your green-top rubbish bin.
The HHW items listed in the Waste & Recycling Guide 2007/2008 are: acids, ammonia, batteries (car, dry-cell, rechargeable), bleaches, cleaning products,
computer components/accessories, energy saving lightglobes fertiliser,
garden chemicals/poison, gas cylinders, insecticides,
kerosene, medicines, mineral turpentine, motor oil,
paint tins (not empty), pesticides, petrol & flammable liquids, poisons, pool chemicals,
radiator coolant, and rat poison.
These items may be taken to the ToB depot.
Other hazardous waste including asbestos, building materials, brake fluid, empty paint tins and tyres must be taken to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility.
Local case study ... A member was about to dispose of a small hand-held vacuum cleaner that had stopped working when I looked underneath and noticed there was a bin symbol
with a cross through it and the letters Cd (symbol for cadmium).
That was a surprise! It will be going to the HHW (hazardous household waste) collection along with 6 spent batteries. |
