GPS coming to the Town's fleet.

At the Sept 28 OCM, Bassendean Council called for a report on the fitting of GPS with duress 'duty-of-care' alarms on the 68 cars, utes, ranger units, buses trucks, ride-on mowers and sundry other vehicles'.

Insurance companies now recognise the benefits of GPS tracking using low cost mobile phone and web systems ... with the reductions in costs and insurance premiums
paying for installation & monitoring charges.

As a guide to size, options are small
enough to attach to dog collars & kids.
Even BPG members have used GPS to
record locations in our bio-management.

People Who Care, PWC of Guildford - needs drivers!

PWC provides services to support the elderly & people with disabilities to live independently in the community.  Most services are by volunteers, including transport. But we need drivers urgently!

Drivers who use their own cars for runs to medical appointments, shopping etc are compensated..
We also have drivers who drive PWC vehicles (usually small buses) for much loved outings.

If interested, contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Nora, at the Guildford Office on 9379 1944.

Bollards at Pickering Park boat ramp - to be moved for more parking

At Tuesday's Bassendean Council meeting, it was resolved to overturn the Council decision of 2007
and relocate the bollards on the east side of the access road to the other side of the line of large trees.
There was an unsuccessful Special Meeting in 2007 to try and do this .... but now it should be done.

Lobby your Councillors, the CEO Bob Jarvis of the Town (9377 8000) or email
Ask to get it done BEFORE this summer season of 2010.

Toilets at Point Reserve - Special Meeting recommendations seek better outcomes

At the August 10 OCM, there should be consideration of the recommendations from the Special Meeting of Electors
seeking a range of better outcomes. They include being located closer to the BBQ's, specifying WALGA-approved
units that can be supplied off-the-shelf for a faster installation at lower costs, plus improved security measures.

Come to the council meeting on Tuesday, Aug 10 at 7pm, 48 Old Perth Road and ask questions / hear the outcomes.

Special Meeting of Bassendean Electors - TOMORROW NIGHT, Monday July 26 - toilets at Pt Reserve, Bassendean

7pm, 48 Old Perth Rd, Monday, July 26

With more than 100 signatures, there will be a special meeting of electors to discuss
the planned toilets replacement at Point Reserve, North Rd, Bassendean.
Come and listen. Make recommendations to Bassendean Council.

There are 4 main concerns:

1. The Town's planned location is near North Road, AND NOT NEAR THE BBQ's & Play equipment - not user friendly!
2. The orientation has the open toilets facing into adjoining bedroom windows - why be so confronting?
3. The cost estimate at $217,000 seems overpriced when WALGA-approved toilets are available at a much lesser price.
4. Better security is available with lights, low cost cameras and video surveillance warning signs - so why not?

This Sunday 11 July
there is a planting morning at Pickering Park
Start is 9:00am.

TofB is supplying the plants and I'm not sure exactly what's on offer, but the TofB EO Steve McCabe
and/or an offsider will be there on the day.

All tools are provided, the only thing you need to bring is yourself.  Plus BPG recommends:
  • some mozzie repellent;
  • wellies as it can be damp in the grass this time of year;
  • a good pair of gardening gloves;
  • a hat to keep off the sun, and;
  • something to shed the rain.  The forecast is possible showers.
Pickering Park is in Bassendean on the river side of North Road & Bassendean Parade
between Watson and Hyland Streets.

Special meeting of Electors to discuss the Kurrajong tree outside 79 North Road, Bassendean
Monday 7pm, June 14, Council Chambers, 48 Old Perth Rd ... up the ramp.

An important win for the river red gums
on the Murray-Darling.

On Wednesday May 19, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally
reversed her position and passed a bill to protect river red
gum trees in the Murray-Darling basin. Thousands of
hectares of these sacred old trees were set to be logged,
but with tireless campaigning of friends in the environment
movement (particularly The Wilderness Society and the
National Parks Association), these ancient trees will now
be safe from logging.

Click here to send a message of thanks to
Premier Keneally on twitter, or here by email.

It is believed that it was planted by THE Cyril Jackson almost 100 years ago.

PRNRM Presentation
Perth Region Natural Resources Management, May 5 2010

Foxes & being neighbourly

Mike Butcher of Animal Pest
Management Services gave an
insightful presentation about foxes
in our Perth metro area this week.

While Bassendean may only have
a small fox problem, with a river
pathway, the Town should have
pro-active fox management.

To save the local fauna from being
wiped out in Bassendean and in
nearby areas, fox management
should be started as soon as
possible on a 'whole of area' basis,
depending on set priorities.

The Town could start by seeking
information on how to do it in
Ashfield Flats, Pickering Park,
Success Hill Reserve and Pyrton.

Q. Where is Yellagonga Regional Park?
A. As close as Joondalup and Wanneroo!

Yellagonga
foxes
Koorong tree
79 North Road - update

The petition signature count is now about
300 with 4 Ex-Mayors about to appear in
the paper as part of Avril Whyte & others commitment to see what alternatives are possible.

There should be more than enough
signatures to call for a Special Meeting
of Electors to discuss the many related issues.

The Town of Bassendean's register of
trees of significance should also be
revamped, with appropriate pictures
and stories related to each tree.
They form an asset of the Town and
like all assets of Local Government
should receive appropriate support
as part of the new Federal Sustainability
policies. Watch this space!

I have to admit that up to hearing the presentation at the PRNRM, I was not
aware of the Yellagonga Regional Park.

It suffers the threat of pollution from stormwater runoff that suffers potential issues from Wangarra Industrial Park and nearby housing that is not sewered. The local long neck turtle suffers with fox numbers in the park, but there are management plans in place to do something about it.

The Friends of Yellagonga Regional Park inc have some 260 members.
They grow 10,000 - 12,000 plants per year for planting out. Check their website.

According to the records, I am reliably informed that the first passengers were carried to and from the new station on May 2,

is back about where it started ... and still does NOT go above

Answer to question ...The bird is a native species Red-capped parrot
(Purpuriecephalus spurius) probably female or juvenille.  The males are a lot brighter in colour with a very clear dark red cap and mauve/purple breast. Quiet common but less so
in suburbia though Kiara being a newer suburb and closer to the hills and more open
habitat they are likely to be more common.  They are a protected species.

Thanks heaps for you interrest and don't hesitate to email me at the Ag Dept with more Q's

At the CSIRO presentation at Floreat Park, April 29 2010,
in answer to a question about the ecosystem and reduced rainfall & groundwater reserves,
it was suggested that plants can adapt
to a changing environment with decreasing water availability
provided such changes were gradual ... makes you think!

Effect of climate change on WA's

CSIRO Land and Water
Water for a Healthy Country Flagship

Thursday 22 April, 3.30 pm
CSIRO Auditorium
Underwood Ave, Floreat, WA
Location Map

CSIRO recently released the findings of the South-West Western Australia
Sustainable Yields Project
– the most comprehensive assessment of water
yields and demands to 2030 ever undertaken for south-west Western Australia.
The project reported on four major components: surface water, groundwater, environment, and yields and demands. Most model projections are for a
substantial reduction in the frequency of high runoff yielding years and a
reduction in the area producing high levels of runoff.

The following FREE 3rd & 4th seminars are:

Thur 29 April:  Environment by Dr Olga Barron
Thur 6 May:  Water Yields and Demands by Dr Don McFarlane
