Two visitors to Hardy Rd
from Ted Bentley

These two black and white cockatoos have been making regular twice daily visits to our bird bath for a week now
and it is unusual for them to go
anywhere that is this close to people.

Mostly, they keep away prefering to remain atop high trees to feed and
rest when passing thru during their migration. Could this be a change emerging due to our impact on their usual habitat?

Obviously, Ted and Carlle's welcome
bird bath is greatly appreciated!

The Qingming Festival (April 5) - a time to plant trees & remember ancestors

This day is an opportunity to remember and honour ancestors at grave sites
plus share traditional meals. Young and old pray before the ancestors,
sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks and joss paper.

The rites have a long tradition in Asia, especially among farmers.
Also on Qingming people go on family outings, start the spring plowing,
plant trees, sing, dance, and Qingming is a time where young couples start
courting. Another popular thing to do is fly kites. It all sounds like a typical
Bassendean Preservation Group planting day to me!

And see to the right another reason to plant more trees! Happy Easter!

The following motion was passed at the Bassendean Council meeting
on Tuesday, March 23.

Assessment of 1 Anzac Terrace development

“That the Council seeks a staff officer report  of the 1 Anzac Terrace
development to consider but not limited to: (a)     graffiti removal and its future visual impact minimisation,
(b)     outcomes of planning officer recommendations,
(c)     current stormwater management practices,
(d)     structural integrity of all retaining walls,
(e)     impact of the surface treatment outside the development,
(f)      safety of broken light fittings,
(g)     possible R code changes to resolve planning issues, and
(h)     changes onsite to encourage more dwellings.

"And on receiving such report(s) on or before June 22 2010, that the Council then determines what actions are needed to improve the 1 Anzac Terrace development
as appropriate.

There are some potential dangerous cracks in the high retaining wall and the idea
of having a possible 'Jacob's Ladder' type of collapse due in part to the heavy rains
of this week, needs to be considered.

Need for REAL control
of the Caltrop prickle.

This afternoon I found a Caltrop seed burr
stuck in my car tyre. It had been there for
2 days being driven on and was still intact
and unbroken. They must be incredibly hard
and resilient.  I had only driven on the bitumen roads so it appears that the Caltrop prickles
are spreading onto the roads and elsewhere
in Bassendean.

ToB employees and the clommunity need
to be aware so they don't spread it around.
It would be the last straw if it got into
Success Hill Reserve.

Regards,
Claire.

caltrop insert

Fast reproduction:

Caltrop needs moisture and heat.
Rain now & expect rapid germination.
It takes only 3 weeks to flower,
then another 10 days for prickles
(or burrs) to form.

Recognition:

Spreading, prostrate plant with
small yellow flowers and a burr with
spines (see pic on the left)

Control:

Hand removal.
Chemical controls are usually
herbicides (like 'Roundup')
by suitably qualified people.

Caltrop (tribulus terrestris)

One plant can produce large quantities of seed that can stay dormant in the ground for many years.

VALE - Cr Sam Piantadosi

The news of Cr Sam Piantadosi’s death Thursday, March 4
following a heart attack has been received with great sadness
by everyone at the Town of Bassendean and the local community.
We all extended to Sam’s family our deepest sympathies

As recently as Tuesday March 2, Cr Piantadosi was seeking a better outcome
for the watering system at the Broadway Arboretum so the efforts of both
the Bassendean Staff and members of groups like the Bassendean
Preservation Group had more rewarding outcomes.
Cr Sam Piantadosi is seen with a Hamilton tree planter at the Arboretum.

Double gees - south end of Hamilton St.

The scale of this infestation is such that my dogs, which I was exercising in the area recently, were unable to walk through it and needed to be carried out.  It also includes the BMX track and therefore renders this facility useless.

Given its proximity to the storm water drain and a path which is used to access the Ashfield Flats it is very likely to that this weed will infest this very important riverfront reserve. Immediate action should be taken to remove all plants and as many seeds as possible. Feedback

Followup Q&A with Professor Hardy at Success Hill. (Sat Feb 20 2010)

The plant disease Phytophthora Dieback has been found in Success Hill Bushland Reserve
and dieback in its many forms is presumed to be in some 90% of all of Perth's parks and reserves.

Professor Giles Hardy from Murdoch University’s Centre for Phytophthora Science and Management
indicated that much more research is needed. The concept of a foundation to fund such research
was seen as a good start, and noted that it could be a 'gift' to Western Australia
for the Bicentennial Celebrations in only 19 years
and also to the world in protecting in unknown botanical treasures before being lost forever.
The many concerns of those attending were noted.

The general agreement that more needs to be done and innovative solutions are needed.
For more information contact Steve McCabe, 9377 8000. (Thanks to the local SES who provided an excellent brunch).

Wisterias for '1 Anzac Tce' graffiti pathway

This week's news roundup

There are around 1000 trains each week passing the graffiti on the limestone and steel fence at the land development known as '1 Anzac Tce'. It is time to do something about it. And something IS happening!

With the Dept of Planning and PTA, there is a joint effort to supply the wisterias and grow them to a stage where they can be planted out along the cyclone fence adjoining the pathway. Fortunately, there is an almost permanent drain with water adjoining the fence, so with a mix of careful planting, the wisterias should cover up the view of the graffiti. Hopefully, some BPG Members might be around mid year to help with the planting?!

It's ASHFIELD Week!

This week's news roundup
Council this week decided to submit underground
power applications for Ashfield plus another 200
nearby residents. Round 5 closes Feb 19 2010.

The Council adopted the 'Western Power' model
which will cost each ratepayer around $5000.
Cr Yates' plan to underground the power for all
at a much lower cost of $400 was withdrawn.

Mr Rob Thornton, Principal Engineer - Electricity Supply, Office of Electrical Safety in the Dept of
Commerce did attend the Council meeting and
suggested that use of the stormwater drainage
system for electricity distribution could be safer
and that Bassendean would have more than
2 years to divert water from the drains and water
the street trees before the drains may be needed.
Mr Thornton did indicate that Western Power was
speeding up the process with a target date around
2020-2025 for all of Perth to be done.

Ashfield Precinct Plan released Jan 21 2010.
Plan is 9MB to download.

Higher densities, a village development on both sides of Colstoun Rd and a train station shift appear to be the main immediate points.

Underground electricity to be considered TWICE by Bassendean Council

This week's news roundup
This Tuesday, 7pm, Jan 19, 48 Old Perth Rd The world of Environmental Technology

At this week's ordinary Council meeting, there
is an officer report about undergrounding power
at a cost of some $5,250 for each ratepayer if the Town is successful in Round 5 of the grant applicatons. Again, if successful, Ashfield is the
first 'cab off the rank'.

There is an alternate motion of Cr Don Yates
showing how an alternate approach could
underground the electricity for ALL of Bassendean,
at the lower cost of only $400 for each ratepayer
and inject 1 gigalitre of stormwater into the
ground for a better environment at the same time.
It means using the Town's stormwater drain
system for the cabling, a point accepted by
Rob Thornton,
Principal Engineer - Electricity Supply,
Office of Electrical Safety,
Dept of Commerce WA.

AshfieldCAN wants help to grow
a Ribbon of Colour ... can BPG help?

  Nano technology cleans our water

The AshfieldCAN Community Group is keen
to grow a Ribbon of Colour from the current
Ashfield Station to the river, but they are seeking
help.

The program could use the many acquired skills
of the Bassendean Preservation Group, like
arranging to nuke the weeds, growing seedlings
and planting them out ... in the winter months.
The first location could be inside the fence of
the Ashfield Soccer Club along Colstoun Road
which may include a watering system I believe.

Please contact
Lucy Bromell - 0402257965
Secretary of AshfieldCAN inc
for a mutual discussion
on this local 'green' community endeavour.

Protecting & Enhancing Bassendean’s Qualities

Should Bassendean have underground power by looking 'outside the box'?

Click on links below when online for details
Personal comment - Don Yates

On Feb 10 2010, the multi-million Federal stormwater harvesting grants program closes.
On Feb 19 2010, Round 5 applications for the
WA State Government Underground Power Applications close. (Each could pick up half
the tab for little cost to Bassendean).

Imagine an underground power program for
all of Bassendean, that does not already have underground power, paid for by stormwater harvesting for better trees using the water
where it falls. The redundant stormwater drainage system is then used to reticulate the underground power network. And yes, broadband could be
rolled out through Bassendean in the same drainage pipework. The Town would also save money with less tree pruning.

There is already a budget allocation for underground power that could pay for the professional grant writing applications in the
short time available to do it.

Any comments ... call me 08 9379 9479 or email Don YATES. Also contact your Councillors.

There is very little time!

If Bassendean is amalgamated in the next
few years, do you want to see an ongoing
legacy for all in the community?

The Bat-tastic boxes project

Click on links below when online for details

bat design changes

Here is a project happening as I write this.
Instead of chemical warfare against the
mozzi's, the idea is to encourage small
mozzi eating bats ... with bat nests ....
and as the story goes, these tiny bats
will eat up to 1000 mozzi's a day!
The first samples should be up the trees
early in 2010. Email Joe the Batman.

And here is another related Melbourne story
on that city's microbats.

WE WANT YOU!
RECRUITING NOW FOR THE
FIGHT AGAINST LITTER IN WA

There are about 4000 West Australians making valuable contribution to the fight against litter. Thanks to your help hundreds of litter infringements are issued monthly to litterbugs by Keep Australia Beautiful enforcement officers. The revenue generated by these infringements is then used to fund community education programs that focus on the importance of keeping Australia beautiful and litter free.

But the fight is not over and we need your help to spread
the word about Keep Australia Beautiful..

Want to encourage your co-workers or peers to keep
Australia beautiful? We can conduct a litter presentation
at your workplace or social group meeting. Simply email kabc@dec.wa.gov.au or phone 6467 5122 to book in your free presentation today.

54 Councils on merger wish list

The government will ask 54 mostly country councils to start sharing “core services” such as building, planning and waste management with the aim to reducing the group significantly through mergers by 2013.

A regional “collaborative’” model of sharing services will be set up for groups of local governments in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Eastern Goldfields and Murchison where distance prevents closer integration.

Local Government Minister John Castrilli said yesterday he would not make public the names of the 54 councils or preferred groupings recommended in the local government reform steering committee’s interim report.

WATERING at Broadway
Saturday Nov 7, 9am-10am

Remaining dieback resistant jarrahs
need a water catchment area, water storage granules, water and your assistance.

The Town does not want water taken
from the swamp so we need volunteers
to bring whatever water you can ...
we hope to give each around 10 litres,
so we need around 400 litres for the
remaining plantings. See Ted's dams.

Bring water, gloves, hat, mozzi stuff
and good boots.
