ASHFIELD FLATS ACTION!

Over the past 3 weeks since I received the Hamilton Tree Planter
I have transplanted approximately 100 flooded gums to various
areas down at the Ashfield Flats. I will probably try planting a few
more but the stock is slowly running out.

Most have transplanted well and I expect a 75-80% success rate.  Most have new growth and show signs of successful transplanting.
I have also staked about 30 at this stage. I have reused stakes
from previous plantings near the pond.

Could you please include this in the agenda items to be included
at the next meeting.
I hope to see you there. Regards, John Buxton

Some extra notes from Steve

John found a spot on the northeast end of Ashfield Flats where Flooded Gums hang over the perimeter track.
The track is kept clear of weeds by foot traffic and occasional
council worker vehicles I suppose, and the seedlings take advantage. They were as thick as grass at that one spot. We've seen the same thing in area D which was sprayed prior to planting last year.

With the competition from weeds temporarily gone, about twenty volunteer Flooded Gums shot up out of the ground this winter.

That's a technique we need to take a look at, knocking the weeds back around existing stands of native trees
and watch the self sown seedlings take off.

TADWA - dispose of old PC's wisely!

TADWA is a Basso based (371 Collier Rd),
not-for-profit organisation that refurbishes
PC's from public & private sector donations
to provide people with disabilities, the frail aged and those who care for them access to computers.  Computers can assist in improving quality of life and reduce social isolation.

We are currently gearing up a Community
Re-Use Project (with both State and Commonwealth Government funding) to provide
an alternative for PC's to avoid landfill.
We have offered TADWA as a drop off point to both South East Metro Council and ERMC for residents who want to dispose of PC's.
We only charge a small fee of $10 for a CRT monitor, everything else we will
process for free.

BIG KANGAROO WALK-OUT
AND PLANTING DAY

10am, Thurs 13th Aug 2009

Similar to a SES search line -
the 1 hour walk is essential to move the group
of kangaroos currently within Woodland Reserve out of the enclosure, to ensure the success of the restoration of the Woodland environment and the animals to be reintroduced.

Kangaroos relocated via the Reserve gates will simply join their counterparts within the greater Park. Please bring everyone you know, sturdy walking shoes/boots and wet weather gear/hat (depending on conditions).

A COMPLIMENTARY BBQ LUNCHEON
will follow the walk for all interested.
This will be followed by an afternoon
of restoration planting.

Please meet at
Whiteman Park Administration
for a pre-walk brief at 10 am.

Simple explanation: Don Yates has retired as a member, including a

the narrow-minded interpretation of the Local Govt Act by some and what
Don would like to achieve for the environment in Bassendean.

Another reminder .....

Renewable Energy and the Mining Industry

WA is the boom state for mining but it also has enormous potential
to become the boom state for renewable energy generation.

Is it possible to meet the burgeoning energy requirements of the mining industry
with the vast sources of renewable energy available in our outback,
conveniently located close to many of our major mineral provinces?
What are the opportunities and barriers for renewable energy and mining?
Will this new energy future be a necessity for industry as we move into a carbon constrained world?

The June Environment Matters will explore how WA can connect
the mining industry to the renewable energy boom.

Guest speakers:
Andrew Beveridge, Business Development Manager for RISE
James Rhee, Managing Director of Swan Energy Pty Ltd
Michael Mullins, General Manager Fuels at Gull

WHEN: From 6.30pm Wednesday 24th June 2009
WHERE: City West Lotteries House Conference Room, 2 Delhi St, West Perth
COST: Free for CCWA affiliates & supporters $10 donation for all others
(light refreshments will be provided following the presentations)

Swan River Trust
DOLPHIN Watch

The Swan River Trust has started a formal study
with a number of registered spotters to track
the dolphin activity in the Swan & Canning Rivers.

A dolphin is identified by the markings
on their dorsal fin.

"A community of about 25  bottlenose dolphins, many of which have probably grown up in the rivers, use the Swan and Canning rivers on a near-daily basis.

Environment Minister Donna Faragher said people could take part in the Dolphin Watch Project by becoming a River Guardian member.

“This project will gather information for Murdoch and Curtin university researchers who have been studying the population since 2001, and believe the dolphins’ local river knowledge is important for their survival,” the Minister said.

“Perth is the only major city in Australia where dolphins are regularly spotted so far upstream - from Fremantle Port to the CBD - and this is a truly unique experience which we want to preserve.

“The group of river dolphins comprise several adult females with dependant calves, one or two ‘alliances’ of tightly-bonded adult males, and a large group of sociable youngsters.

“However, the river dolphin community is small and experiences pressure from loss of habitat, decreasing prey, entanglement, boat strikes and noise.

“The Dolphin Watch Project volunteers will be recording and reporting their observations of these dolphins throughout the year.

“We can all help protect dolphins while out on the water by keeping our distance, never feeding them, fishing responsibly and watching out for resting pods.

Why not consider becoming a registered litter reporter.
I am # 927 myself. See the stats below:

In January, KABC had 90 new litter reporters join up
and received a record 565 reports.
I n February 144 new reporters signed on and
we received a new record of 667 reports.

We now have 3,200 registered litter reporters
and have issued over 17,000 cigarette butt
infringements and over 2,000 general littering
infringements since 2004. That's a fantastic effort!
