Bassendean Primary School
wants to build a community path.

Path

Bassendean Primary School launched the next round of their fundraiser just before end of term 1.  Leaflets went home to all
families with a deadline of June 26. The order for bricks will go
off on that date.

If you know of any former students of Bassendean PS who may
like to consider this offer of a laser enscribed brick to be laid in
the school grounds then please let me know and I’ll get a leaflet
to them. They can put whatever they like on these bricks, neat
laser names and dates or a childs handdrawn picture, just
nothing offensive (duh) and no business plugs!

A single brick is $30 and a double is $75.

The funds raised will be used for the laying of the path and more
benches around the trees. The benches we love came in at $1200
each and we’ve ordered our first as the Easter Raffle raised $1300.

Days of Change / local climate change webpage

Since January this year Gary Warden has been working on an
almost full-time voluntary basis on an exciting new climate change
project called Days of Change which some of you will have already
heard about.

This is a project that aims to engage 200,000 Western Australians
in taking simple steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions
during March 2010.

However this is only the start, as a project of the City of Perth
Rotary Club, and with endorsement from Rotary District 9450,
we intend to use the enormous reach of the Rotary organisation
to expand the program to the rest of Australia in 2011 and the
world from 2012.

It is not confirmed, but there may be a meeting
on Thursday evening, (TONIGHT), to continue
the discussions and seek more feedback from
the community in relation to the possible developments of Ashfield and the surrounding
area, including the Cyril Jackson Campus.

The deadline for public submissions is only
2 weeks away, Monday May 4.

To find out more about the Planning Papers
for Ashfield and get a feedback form ....

There is also a petition that has been assembled
to call for a Special Meeting of Electors to discuss the Cyril Jackson Campus ...

It may go like the Hollywood High School,
which is now a housing estate. Email for details.

The time, place and date for this meeting
has not been confirmed, but it is worth noting
that the closing time for public submissions
is Monday, May 4.

Can anyone help James
with Ashfield Flats information ....

My name is James Quinton. I am currently writing a literary site analysis of the Ashfield Flats (as a University of Western Australia Landscape Architecture honours project). I have come across Ron van Delft's photo essay from the 80's and have found it to be a valuable document.

In any case, I am writing to you to see if any of the Bassendean Preservation group members have any more information like that?

If you, or anyone you know is interested and has the time to walk through the flats and discuss the area with me, I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks for your time, James

Social carbon
Social Carbon is a methodology developed by the
Ecologica Institute that delivers high-quality projects
to the voluntary carbon market.

Social Carbon greenhouse gas reduction credits are a
little bit different. In addition to being Verified according
to the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), Social Carbon Credits comply with a stringent methodology developed
in the jungles of the Brazilian Amazon over the course
of a decade, which makes these credits a match for even
the most discerning buyer.

Is this a program for BPG in Bassendean?

Medical experts around the world are talking about a new epidemic, a health concern
that may be dramatically increasing our
risk of cancer, hypertension and even diabetes
– it’s a lack of Vitamin D.

Some experts predict that up to 25 per cent of Australians could be Vitamin D deficient. The cause is something that’s been known for nearly a century, a lack of sunshine. There now seems to be a connection between breast, colon and prostate cancer and a lack of Vitamin D.
ABC Catalyst Health Guide ...

A way to save your life
by getting more Vitamin D
could be as simple as planting trees

A possible new competition ...
building the fastest / tastiest solar cooker ...

Cardboard, alfoil and some sticky tape
and you have your own solar cooker.

Solar Cookers International (SCI) spreads
solar cooking awareness and skills worldwide,
particularly in areas with plentiful sunshine and
diminishing sources of cooking fuel. Since its
founding in 1987, SCI has enabled 30,000
families in Africa to cook with the sun's energy,
freeing women and children from the burdens
of gathering firewood and carrying it for miles.
Tens of thousands of individuals and
organisations — from all over the world —
have learned about solar cooking through SCI’s
excellent publications & education resources,
and have benefited from SCI’s info exchange
networks, research, technical support, and the
SCI-sponsored, internationally recognised
Internet resource for solar cooking information:
the Solar Cooking Archive.

Protection of solar
now part of
R building codes
Now, with a new clause in the R-Codes
(Design for Climate Requirements),
aesthetics is no longer a consideration
in the selection of solar panel location.

And, by increasing the importance and right
to solar access, the new clause stipulates
that a new development must be designed
to protect solar access so that it should not overshadow:

• Outdoor living areas
• Major openings to habitable rooms
• Solar collectors
• Balconies or verandahs

Some of the Federal
residential rebates etc
  Eligibility

For a time-limited period of two and a half years, from 1 July 2009, owner-occupiers without ceiling insulation will be eligible for
free product and installation (capped at
$1,600) simply by making a phone call.

As an interim arrangement, from 3 February until 30 June 2009, eligible owner-occupiers who install ceiling insulation in their homes
will be able to seek reimbursement (up to $1,600) after the program commences.

Renter’s Assistance

Many of Australia’s most vulnerable
households are renters, who do not own a home. To help these households lower their emissions and save money on energy bills,
the Government will double the rebate (from $500 to up to $1,000) available under the
Low Emissions Plan for Renters. This will encourage more landlords to install insulation
in their rental properties, and it’s expected
that 500,000 rented homes will benefit from
the increased assistance. The increased rebate is available from 3 February until
30 June 2011.

Increased Solar Hot Water Rebate

In addition, the Government will increase the Solar Hot Water Rebate from $1,000 to $1,600 – effective from 3 February 2009 and available until 30 June 2012. The rebate will not be means-tested.

Under the Energy Efficient Homes package, homeowners will be able to access either the insulation program or the solar hot water rebate.

These investments by the Government will ensure that the maximum number of
Australians – both homeowners and renters – will have access to practical measures that
help them reduce their energy use and save
on energy bills prior to the introduction of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

Increasing the number of energy efficient homes in Australia will produce a win/win
result. More insulated homes and more solar hot water systems will result in reduced energy bills. Reduced energy bills mean less energy consumed & less greenhouse gas emissions being released into our fragile environment.

To find out more about the Energy Efficient Homes initiative call the Energy Efficient Homes Package Hotline on 1800 808 571 or go online to www.environment.gov.au

Seed balls -
a possible way of spreading seeds.

Seedballs could be a quick and easy way of distributing seed, (particularly
some of the old stocks), in areas like Bindaring Park and Ashfield Flats.
Imprinting could also be used to help in the process. (See diagram below)

for around 22.9 cents per unit ... and buy it for around 15 cents per unit.

Earth Hour (March 28)

In 2007, 2.2 million people took part in the world's first Earth Hour in Sydney Australia. Just one year later, 50 million people in 370 cities and towns, in more than 35 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach more than one billion people in 1000 cities around the world, inviting communities, business and governments to switch off lights for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday March 28 and sending a powerful global message that we care enough about climate change to take action.

Join us for Earth Hour at 8:30pm Saturday March 28 2009!

It's official ...
all BPG members must be Irish ...

or hate using hand sprinklers

Not one entry to the competition,
"How many BPG Members does it take to change a light globe"
or does no one like hand sprinkling .... see website for comp detail ...?

We will switch back to wine for prizes in future comps.

Make money
from renewable energy ...
Sign the FEED IN Tariff petition.
Gross feed in tariffs mean you can buy electricity at a lower price
and sell electricity back to the grid for a higher price .. at the same time!

In WA, peak times for best income is Mon-Fri, 11am -5pm ...
for around 22.9 cents per unit ... and buy it for around 15 cents per unit.

That's the simplified answer ... you need to get all the details before
making a decision .... and yes, I do have PV cells on the roof - Don
